The fundamental unfairness of the vacation auto reply - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
The basic shamefulness of the get-away auto answer - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog With the late spring occasions quickly drawing closer, Ive been pondering vacation?auto answers. Heres the problem:?Although any individual who sends you a mail?is advised not to expect an answer until you get back, they most likely despite everything expect an answer?at that point. This is in a general sense uncalled for. Youre away from work. As a component of your agreement with the organization, you have a break and yet?some of the work from your get-away time is thereby?shifted into your post-excursion work days. Also, I?dont think Ive ever?heard of a?company that plans for?their workers to have additional time after a get-away to manage the messages that came in during the get-away. Accordingly this turns out to be extra work?you need to do on head of your customary assignments. One outcome of this is that?many individuals wind up browsing their messages and reacting to them during?their occasions, which is additionally unjustifiable. Youre entitled?to time away from work. That is the thing that a?holiday is. One of the most guileful impacts of this?is that taking?longer time frames from the workplace is rebuffed quickly upon return, in light of the fact that your inbox will be full to flooding. I haven?t seen any examination on this, however I could without much of a stretch envision that this would?subconsciously?discourage individuals from requiring some serious energy off?or in any event increase?stress around whenever off. What would we be able to do about it??This strategy from Daimler is the arrangement: The vehicle and truck producer has executed another program that permits representatives to set their email programming to consequently erase approaching messages while they are on an extended get-away. When an email is sent, the program, which is called ?Mail on Holiday,? issues an answer to the sender that the individual is out of the workplace and that the email will be erased, while additionally offering the contact data of another worker for squeezing matters. Splendid. Now?you can take some time off realizing that when you return, your inbox will contain indistinguishable number of messages from when you left. I think this is the ideal arrangement and I couldn't imagine anything better than to see more organizations receive it. Possibly this is something associations could work for in the 21st century. Your take Do you have an excursion auto answer? Do you browse and answer to messages during your excursion or handle them all when youre back? ?In the event that you travel for about fourteen days, what number of sends will be in your inbox when you get back? What amount time will it take you to manage them and how would you plan for it? The Disadvantages of Going to Law School at a Later Age
The Disadvantages of Going to Law School at a Later Age The Disadvantages of Going to Law School at a Later Age Going to graduate school is a critical choice at any age. Its a colossal monetary responsibility and its a critical time duty also. Obviously, if youve consistently needed to be a legal counselor, theres most likely that its value the penance. However, imagine a scenario where youre more seasoned. The normal period of first-year graduate school understudies is around 24, however imagine a scenario in which youre more established than that. Consider the possibility that youve went through years in another calling, however you continue thinking, What on the off chance that I returned to class and got my law degree. Going to graduate school can be an impressive test for more established understudies who left the scholarly world years prior. Add to that a saturated work advertise, relentless rivalry, and a changing legitimate industry, and you may think about whether its justified, despite all the trouble or regardless of whether you can make sure about an occupation after youve graduated and beat the lawyer exam. On the other hand, you may find that these elements dont especially threaten or stop you. In either case, here are a couple of contemplations for going to graduate school at a later age. Would you be able to Afford It? Theres no chance to get around it-going to graduate school is costly. U.S. News World Report investigated only how expensive in 2017 and found that the normal understudy at one of the best 10 law schools spent a normal of $60,923 annually on educational cost and charges. That comes out to more than $182,000 complete, a pummeling venture to make in your future. This is especially the situation if youre effectively secured with a home loan and supporting a family. Obviously, you dont need to go for the stars. Nothing says you need to go to one of the main 10 schools, and theres continually financing accessible. In any case, remember that in the event that you money your instruction through credits, you wont have the same number of years left in your working life to reimburse them. Truly, the normal retirement age has been going up as of late. As indicated by MarketWatch, it was age 64.6 starting at 2015. On the off chance that you move on from graduate school at age 35, that despite everything leaves you near 30 years to take care of those advances before you resign. In this regard, theres not an extremely critical distinction between moving on from graduate school at age 26 or age 35. You despite everything have some an ideal opportunity to take care of your understudy advances. Be that as it may, imagine a scenario where youre 45. Its critical to gauge the advantages of coming back to class against the money related weights of assisting your instruction, especially in the event that you have kids who will likewise be taking off to school directly around a similar time youre entering graduate school. For certain families, it can come down to whether youre going to help pay for their trainings or for your own. Age Bias Age predisposition exists in the lawful calling similarly as it does in numerous different businesses. A few firms like to employ more youthful, unpracticed specialists who are happy to work for less cash, just as for different reasons, for example, profession life span, trainability, and responsibility. Age separation can be a test for more established specialists, and the present extreme activity advertise just fuels the circumstance. This is the place what you were doing in those years between school graduation and graduate school becomes an integral factor. Is it accurate to say that you were working in a field that was identified with the law? Possibly you were a cop or a paralegal. For this situation, the law office isnt getting a more seasoned laborer whos despite everything inexperienced with regards to lawful issues, somebody who might need to begin from the beginning at age 40 or something like that. Theyre getting a prepared proficient who just put the completing lawful touch on his experience by getting that law degree. This can separate you from more youthful candidates, and positively. Profession Opportunities Insights show that its increasingly hard for more established legal counselors to get a vocation everywhere law offices, and large firms ordinarily offer the most rewarding pay rates. Be that as it may, this doesnt mean you wont have any open doors not too far off. As indicated by the National Association for Law Placement, 53 percent of graduate school graduates who are 36 years of age or more established go into private practice or get firms together with less than 10 lawyers. Just 17 percent join law offices that utilize in excess of 250 lawyers. Look at your objectives. In the event that youre considering going to graduate school at age 35 or even age 40, youre most likely doing it since law is something youve consistently been devoted about. You may be completely glad opening your own firm, in spite of the fact that you should remember that this will require a little beginning up capital notwithstanding taking care of those understudy advances. Be that as it may, if youre going to graduate school simply in quest for a six-figure pay, you should take some time to consider before you contribute the time and the cash. U.S. News World Report additionally demonstrates that independent specialists earned a middle salary in the area of $68,000 per year, and those that enter the open segment, for example, section level investigators, finished out at about $52,000. Be that as it may, obviously, these are middle figures, not midpoints, so in any event half of those working in these limits were acquiring more. Profession Longevity More seasoned representatives entering the lawful calling have less working a long time in front of them, so managers some of the time waver to employ second-vocation legal counselors. Numerous law offices look for workers who are happy to make a drawn out duty to the firm, legal advisors who will stay sufficiently long to make accomplice and add to the drawn out development of the association. This is the place you need to sell yourself. On the off chance that you have an energy for the law, let it appear. Indeed, the firm probably won't have you around as long as it would that 27-year-old, yet in the event that the 27-year-old is yawning or squirming her way through the meeting, you may in any case put on a show of being the better possibility. Time Commitment Time is a major thought and reasonably so. Older workers frequently have kids, maturing guardians, and different responsibilities that keep them from making the 50-to 80-hour-out of each week time duty that numerous law offices require. This gives a few firms and associations valid justification to waver to enlist more seasoned representatives. Make a stride back and take a gander at your life. Can you put in mega hours? Possibly youll be 45 when you graduate, yet youre a divorced person and your children are developed so you can commit your life to the firm. Leave that alone known. Recollect that planned managers cannot get some information about your home life, however youre in every case allowed to chip in the data. On the off chance that youre 35 and wedded with three children, be that as it may, or if youre 35 and separated with care of three children, you can be moderately certain that future businesses will be attentive regardless of whether they simply accept this is the situation. Trainability More seasoned laborers are frequently increasingly stubborn, so businesses some of the time dread that they cannot be shaped or prepared as without any problem. Some more established workers likewise think that its off-kilter to acknowledge assignments or heading from more youthful directors. Is this you? Age truly is only a number. In the event that you grasp each modern device your children bring home, on the off chance that you listen eagerly when your 30-year-old neighbor attempts to disclose something to you about which he knows a lot and you know nothing, figure out how to get this attribute across to planned businesses. Else, you should remain in your present calling, since theres a solid possibility that the legal counselor youll be announcing will be at any rate a couple of years more youthful than you are. Realize That Youre Not Alone The Law School Admissions Council has evaluated that roughly 30 percent of graduate school understudies are not tossing their four-year-degree tops into the air and continuing straightforwardly to graduate school theyve taken at any rate a couple of years to think it. The chances are that around three out of each 10 different candidates making progress toward the activity you need will be near your age and confronting similar snags. Ensure you stand apart from them and that you give those twenty-year-olds a little rivalry, as well.

While there are other things to consider such as your academic background, personality and physical attributes, having a well-written resume is something that will be remembered by the company. Here are a few tips to help you write your concentration on resume:Employers are not always able to judge whether or not a person is serious about pursuing a particular career. They will simply look at what that person says in their CV. Make sure that you make a great first impression with your CV by presenting it in the best possible way.The layout of your resume is as important as its overall presentation. Why ( How!) to Care About Your Career When Everything Else Feels More Important - When I Grow Up
Why ( How!) to Care About Your Career When Everything Else Feels More Important - When I Grow Up Its been a week and change as of now, and I believe were all despite everything lamenting. We feel numb. Were furious. Were coming out of a stunned, paralyzed state. Yet additionally: were enabled. Were ascending. Weve vowed to do everything we can to ensure our crucial rights. The vast majority of us have just given gifts and additionally chipped in our chance to the gatherings that are lined up with our qualities. Weve shaped and joined private Facebook bunches that are tied in with making a move. At the point when the world feel like its going to self-destruct, or implode, and that our fundamental common freedoms are in question How the hell do you care about your profession? How the hell do you put your own wellbeing and satisfaction first? How the hell do you make an opportunity to chip away at your own arrangements? Who are you to accomplish work you love? Who are you to help other people better themselves? Who are you to part from the agreement? Youre not exceptional. You should keep in your path. Make time just to elect to better the world, not your own life. It feels narrow minded, correct? You feel like a boastful jolt, isn't that so? As you can envision, my answer is: NO. A bigly (I cannot support myself) NO. At the point when I heard the news a week ago that my competitor the person who ran on a foundation of adoration and resistance, the person who would break the greatest unfair limitation, the person who was anticipated by each survey in the land to win lost, I felt terrible about to such an extent. I stressed over my companions who might be ousted, or whose families may never again be legitimately perceived. I stressed over my own social insurance and a womans option to pick and prejudice against my transracial family. I made them thing on the schedule that day to do: a one-on-one meeting. Also, I thought, right away: Goodness, how I am anticipating that session. This is where and how I contribute great to this world. Im hippy-dippy enough to accept that the more individuals who accomplish their best work regularly, the more joyful and more advantageous and kinder the Universe. Its consistent light, love, and joy. I can picture it in my brain, leaving the world aglow. Its a definitive instrument for Good, our most noteworthy kryptonite. It was additionally not lost on me that the customer I was working with that day was one who was building a program to help people who need to be a piece of making increasingly social equity. My best work that prompts her best work will make a gradually expanding influence of positive change on the planet, as little and amazing strides. Gracious, how I am so happy I work for myself. I didnt need to manage a packed drive to an office Id be tied to for 8 hours. I had the option to take a gander at my schedule, finish on the most significant assignment, and reschedule the rest. I had the option to invest energy in a shower with my diary, and sleep late morning, and watch 2 scenes of Judge Judy toward the beginning of the day. I had the option to play with my child and get the house and simply deal with myself in a manner I couldnt on the off chance that another person was making major decisions. Working for ourselves and building organizations that serve our most noteworthy great while contributing goodness to othersthats a major bit of improving the world a spot. Truly, its narrow minded to suspect something. Overcome ATS Resume Myths to Boost Job Search Success
Overcome ATS Resume Myths to Boost Job Search Success Recently I completed a comprehensive ATS and SEO course through Career Professionals of Canada (CPC). Over a two week period we studied the role technology plays in a modern job search along with ATS best practices. We discovered how major applicant tracking systems, like Taleo, are used in the hiring process to read, sort, and qualify resumes. It is estimated that 75% of candidates kill their interview chances as soon as they submit their resume through an ATS. This is due to formatting flaws and ATS mistakes. (Preptel) With the increased use of ATS in the hiring process (almost all major companies use some form of automated resume selection), there is a LOT of content swirling on the MUST and MUST-NOTâs when it comes to designing a resume for ATS. Yet not all of it is true. Applicant tracking systems are continuously evolving and getting more sophisticated, so what may have been a big resume âno-noâ a few years ago is now more acceptable. To boost job search success, here are a few big resume ATS myths that the CPC course debunked: Myth #1: You can only submit your resume as a .txt file Although some older systems can only read select formats, most newer systems read, and prefer .docx and PDF. How can you tell what to submit? The system will tell you. If the application process requests a .docx format â" go for it, but ensure it is ATS-optimized (more on this to come). If it requests a PDF, or allows you to also attach in addition to uploading a Word file, then do so. Just donât password protect your file. The goal is to develop a resume that is BOTH computer and human-friendly. Thatâs right. You need to create a resume with both audiences in mind. An ATS extracts and organizes select content, qualifying it against job requirements. If the resume succeeds in the system it will be passed onto a human reader. Take careful consideration of the format, structure, mechanics, content, and design of the file so BOTH the system and the recruiter can rank it appropriately. Myth #2: Resume length matters In ATS, length does not matter. However, a human reader may have preferences about resume length (and only so much patience to review detailed content), so be strategic with how much content you include. Carefully qualify details from throughout your career to ensure information is relevant, without placing unnecessary page length restrictions upon yourself. Myth #3: You can NOT use capitalization, text justification, or different fonts in your resume file You actually can. Capitalization, text justification, and the use of multiple fonts in your resume are not a common concern for ATS. Just donât go wild. Avoid creating potential obstacles for the system with overly decorative fonts, squished words, or tightly spaced text. Also, ensure that text is not obscured by underlining or bolding. The goal is to ensure all letters are clear so that content can be identified. Expanded text can be read, but condensed text may not be deciphered. Myth #4: Contact details MUST be introduced and addresses included Nope. Gone are the days of listing: Phone: 222-555-6666 | Email: joejobseeker@mail.com Feel free to list contact information without descriptors as ATS is smart enough to recognize these facts (at the top of the file). Eliminating extra words also keeps the resume streamlined and less cluttered, freeing up space for more relevant details. You may also be wondering about the value of including an actual home address on your resume. To include or not to include? Personal preference may come into play here and you may decide not to include your complete mailing address. This is a-ok so long as your location still appears on the file. i.e.: Calgary, Alberta or Houston, Texas. Including a location is very important because many systems are set up to search and qualify based on location! Myth #5: Never put information in the document header or footer You can, but keep in mind that most ATS will not âreadâ details housed in the header or footer. It is best to avoid putting any important content in the file header or footer like your name and contact details, which are best shared in the body of the file. You can still put page numbers, graphics, quotes, or endorsements in these spaces, for the eventual human reader. Again, feel free to share select details in the header or footer, but not important contact information. Myth #6: ATS resumes can NOT include images or graphics Incorrect. Again, the goal is to design your resume for both computer and human readers. Design components are a great strategy to make your resume more attractive to the eventual human reader. These elements will simply not be âseenâ by ATS. So go ahead and include them, within reason. This includes a bit of color, if youd like. If you choose to display major content details within a text box, graphic, or chart, ensure these details are translated into the actual body of the file so ATS can read them. Also, if you include a chart or graph insert them into the file as image files! Images are disregarded by the system and therefore wont muddle the content of the file. Myth #7: Keywords are not overly important and buzzwords are bad Keep in mind that each system will be set up to read, parse, and rank content uniquely. Since you will never know exactly what employers are searching for, and which keywords will be weighted the highest, your safest bet is to include the following: A rich amount of relevant keywords (even buzzwords) as they appear in the posting, along with perceived and possible keyword variations. For example, the posting might request experience with âmanaging a teamâ but you might also want to consider including a variation like âteam managementâ. Acronyms AND fully spelled out versions like Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) or Project Management Professional (PMP). An assortment of long-tail keywords/phrases which are made up of multiple words that may also be searched (depending on the posting and industry), such as long-term relationships, selling products or services, facilitating workshops, or smooth project deliveries. Always, always, always custom create each resume with an audience in mind, aligning expertise with job requirements and using repeatable, meaningful keywords and phrases. Repeat select keywords strategically (think repeatable and relevant). ATS may count the appearances of certain keywords and increase ranking based on how long certain skills were applied in your career, so repeating relevant words is important within reason. Donât overpopulate or use out of context. Populate your entire file with keywords, not just the Experience section. Areas you can include keywords: title, headers, skill section, tagline, accomplishments, responsibilities, education, training, volunteer, and within the fileâs metadata! Demonstrate proficiency with keywords, skills, and job requirements by sharing these in context and with a rich assortment of metrics. 5 Good Personal Branding Habits For Bloggers
5 Good Personal Branding Habits For Bloggers 22 Blogging for job search? Here are 5 personal brand-building habits worth making part of your blogging routine. A word of warning By taking on new habits, you build expectations of what you can do. Although you should try out all of these suggestions, once you understand the effort each habit involves, ask yourself if you'll be able to sustain that effort. If you can't, just don't make that suggestion a regular habit, instead keeping it in mind for exceptional occasions.eval 1) Watch trends Make it a regular part of your routine to follow the trends in your industry. Staying current is to stay relevant. This can be as quick as a daily glance at the last 100 tweets of a (your?) Twitter List of industry leaders and news sources or a monthly check of Google Trends.eval 2) Watch your trends Track all your brand-building activities, because this is the only way to know which tactics are working and which aren't. Tracking is a long-term activity but you should make it a regular habit to glance at your statistics packages and get an idea of progress or lack thereof. If you're considering a new tactic, always ask yourself how you'll measure its results. If you can't see a way, ask for help or consider a different tactic instead. 3) Do a nice thing for someone every day Make it a point of doing at least one thing daily that a specific person will really appreciate. It can be as small as answering a question or sincerely complimenting on a job well done. Even better- do something that a specific group of people will really appreciate. Best- do something that a specific group of people will really appreciate where each of them feels as if it was done just for them, and do it in a public way so that other people will want to be included in that group next time. If you're a blogger, one example would be a blog post that responds to a common query of readers, with a section that addresses â" by name â" specific readers' individual twists. You would only know which queries are common if you're watching your trends to begin with. To take into account the earlier habits- that common query might be about a new trend, or something that's about to become a new trend. 4) React quickly One of the easiest ways to impress anyone is with speed. People are busy, and by responding quickly to them, they appreciate both your effort to get their request done but done in a way that makes their own responses easier due to the extra unanticipated time you've given them. Continuing with our above example, be first or among the first to address a common query of your readers, because it's likely to be a common query of your non-readers â" potential readers to-be â" as well. Another typical example is email. While it is tempting to keep your email open all the time so that you can immediately react to new messages, that practice can easily harm productivity if you receive messages regularly. Experiment until you find a good compromise, such as checking your email once every 1-2 hours but only responding when a one-line reply is enough, while delaying other responses until after lunch or before the end of your day. 5) Daily blog comment Make it a point of commenting on at least one blog article per day. Vary your blog selection to cover blogs of industry colleagues, friends, fans, people you admire, even competitors. While comments on big blogs are more likely to be seen, comments on small blogs are more likely to be appreciated, so aim for a balance of both. It's critical that your comment be constructive and valuable, and not an airy âgreat post!' that adds nothing while making you look silly or spammer-like. Bloggers love good comments, making them another example of something nice you can do daily. Commenting soon after a trend-related article was published â" a momentum-maker that will endear you even more to the blogger â" is a great way to apply all the suggestions mentioned here so far. How to Ask For a Promotion
How to Ask For a Promotion How to Ask for a Promotion at Work Salary / https://www.edenscott.com/blog Somebody asked me recently: what are the best ways to get promoted fast at my work? And how do I ask for a promotion directly?Ive helped quite a few people get promotions at work (and Ive done it myself) so I decided to put together an in-depth guide to how to ask for a promotion AND how to get promoted fast throughout your career. What youll get in this article:3 methods you can use to ask for a promotion right now9 steps to give yourself the best possible chance of getting promotions throughout your careerMistakes to avoid when you ask for a promotionLets get startedPart I: How to Ask For a PromotionAsking for a promotion at work isnât easy if youâve never done it before. This section will walk you through how to ask for a promotion with 3 proven methods.By the time you finish, you will feel confident and ready to approach your boss and ask for a promotion. One of the most common reasons that people leave their jobs is lack of career-advancing oppo rtunities. So taking the time to explore internal opportunities before spending months job hunting is a great idea. And in many cases, your boss will be THRILLED to hear you want a promotion. Your manager canât read your mind and might think youâre satisfied in your current role.So the best way to get promoted is to simply ask and express your desire to advance. Now letâs look at how to do thisâ¦When is the Right Time to Ask For a Promotion? The best time to ask for a promotion is after youâre comfortable that youâve learned your current position and are performing well at your core tasks. After this, you should tell your boss that youâre eager to learn new more and take on new challenges. This will signal to your manager that youâre interested in earning a promotion soon.Any good manager will be excited to hear this, so donât be afraid to bring this up with them, whether itâs asking for a specific promotion or just talking about future opportunities in general.Part of a managerâs job is to help employees advance and grow. This is often what they take pride in. A manager cannot do his or her job if youâre not open about what you hope to accomplish within the company. How to Ask For a Promotion: The Indirect MethodThis whole method tends to work better as a long term plan. If youâre completely fed up and thinking of leaving your company immediately due to lack of growth, you should probably skip right to Method 2.The first method of getting promoted involves asking for responsibilities first, and then growing into the role.Think of it as âtry before you buyâ model, both for you and the company.Essentially, youâd find a few areas that youâre interested in learning more about, and slowly incorporate some of these responsibilities into your current job.You do this without officially changing job title (yet). You simply ask for new responsibilities rather than asking for a promotion. The goal is to be promoted and have these responsibilit ies become a permanent part of your job once youâve learned the basics. This is better in a company that is smaller or more flexible in terms of structure. In flexible organizations, senior management will have more freedom to let you try out new things. And sometimes a job looks great from the outside, but once you step into the role you find that itâs not enjoyable. Thatâs where a trial period can be fantastic for both sides.I was once promoted into a Project Manager job and ended up hating it. I wish I had tried it out more âindirectlyâ before accepting the change in job title, because I quickly moved back to my old role that I was much happier in.How to Ask For a Promotion: The Direct MethodThis is the more direct way of asking for a promotion. This path toward promotion involves requesting a new job or new responsibilities up-front (before trying it out). With this method of asking for a promotion, youâd want to schedule a time to sit down with your manager. Then in th e meeting, be clear that youâd like a promotion, and ask if thereâs an opportunity for that. You can ask your manager if theyâre aware of any higher-level jobs in the group, or what positions other people have gone on to take in the company. This will allow your manager to provide some helpful feedback and indicate to you whether they think youâre ready for a promotion or not.Example of what to say when asking for a promotion with this method:âHi Name. Thanks for meeting with me. I wanted to sit down with you to discuss the idea of a promotion. Iâve been with the group for 14 months now, I feel like Iâm excelling at my core work, and would love the opportunity to take on more and move into a higher-level role in the organization. Is there anything that comes to mind that might suit me as I look to grow within the company? Or what have other people gone on to do in the organization after âgraduatingâ from this role?âHow to Ask For a Promotion: The Ask-First MethodF inally, if youâre not sure the best way to approach your boss to ask for a promotion, thereâs one more option. You can ask them what THEY prefer.Iâll explainâ¦Instead of guessing how your boss wants you to do things, you could simply go to them and say:âHi Name. Letâs say I wanted to earn a promotion⦠How would that process look, and how do you usually like an employee to handle that with you?âNow they can tell you what they expect, how other people have gotten a promotion in the past, etc.Youâre being less direct and upfront than with the âDirect Methodâ above, yet youâre not spending weeks or months taking on new responsibilities without any assurance itâll earn you a promotion. So if youâre not sure how to get this process started, or you read the first two methods above and donât think either seems quite right for you, then use this third method.Mistakes to Avoid when Asking for a PromotionAny of the 3 methods above can work very well. And any type of conversation you have with your manager about promotions will usually be a good thing. However, there are some BAD times to ask for a promotion and some mistakes to avoid when asking. So now that you know what to say when asking for a promotion, lets look at what NOT to say and do.First, make sure you show appreciation for your current job when asking for a promotion. You never want to sound frustrated or upset. You want to sound excited about how things are going, and eager to take on more. Thatâs the angle to take.Next, donât ask for a promotion when youâre in a brand new role or new company. Itâs also not a good idea to ask when youâre struggling to perform well or have been getting poor performance reviews.Learn your current job and make sure youâre performing well, first. Then ask for a promotion. Also, keep your reasons for wanting a promotion work-related, and focused on your skills and contributions to the company.Donât ask for a promotion because somebody else got promoted.Donât ask for a promotion because youâve been at the company for X amount of time, either. You need to perform if you want to be promoted in most companies.Spending time in the organization isnât enough. Iâd recommend focusing on your results, not time spent, if you want to get promoted. Also, donât ask for a raise or promotion due to personal issues (long commute, gas prices, etc.) This is not as effective as asking for a promotion based on merit and work-related reasons (like the value you bring to the organization, the skills and experience you have, etc.)Leaving Your Company is Also an OptionSometimes itâs worth waiting for a promotion, but remember that you can also begin a job search and look elsewhere. Not every company offers advancement and growth. Not every company even cares. So if youâre in a bad company, you should leave. If you feel stuck or like youâve hit a ceiling or dead-end, thatâs a good reason to leave, too. Some employers deserve your loy alty; others donât.Itâs smart to explore internal options for advancement before starting the time-consuming process of job hunting, but both can be great options. And you can often earn a bigger raise by changing company versus simply changing roles. This isnât always the case, butI recommended changing companies at least 2-3 times in your career. As a Recruiter, the lowest salaries Iâve seen (relative to their jobs) were the people who stayed at a company for 10-15+ years.Iâve seen shockingly-low salaries for people who have done this. Iâm talking about salaries that are $20K-30K below what they should have been. This is what can happen if you stay with one company for 20+ years. So find a balance between asking for promotions and also changing companies a few times in your career.Part II: How to Get Promoted FAST at WorkNow that weve looked at 3 methods for how to ask for a promotion at work, lets look at some strategies and steps you can use BEFORE asking for a promotio n to boost your chances of hearing yes. These are 9 tips for how to get a promotion fast at work.1. Find a great boss who supports youBad bosses will hold you back! I personally think having a great boss is even more important than finding a great company.Ideally, find both. One of the best ways to get promoted is to find a fast growing company *and* a great boss. But heres the bottom line: If your boss isnt supportive, its going to be 10 times harder to get a promotion regardless of how hard you work.Avoid bosses who seem jealous, impatient, rude, frustrated or unhappy at work. Ive had some awful, awful bosses and it was not fun.And Ive had amazing bosses who literally propelled my career forward through advice, support and genuinely WANTING to see me do well. Theres nothing better! Go find a situation like this.2. Volunteer for more responsibilitiesDonât wait to be asked to do more and dont limit yourself to only doing whats in your job description. If youre doing a good job with y our normal responsibilities, look for ways to take on more. Ask your boss what else you can help with.Look for ways to improve processes in your company, help the team more, make other peopleâs jobs easier, etc. (But always handle your âcoreâ responsibilities first).A good boss will be thrilled that youre taking initiative to ask what else you can do and learn. And its their job to find ways to keep you engaged and growing!Thats why I mentioned the importance of having a great boss in point #1 above. So to recap, so far having a great boss and taking initiative to ask them for more responsibilities is one of the best ways to get promoted in your job.Lets talk about some other things now3. Take a bigger role in company meetings and eventsParticipate in events. Make sure people get used to seeing you at company events whenever possible. Volunteer to help out any time your company does something like volunteering in the community, putting on a party for the holidays, or anything e lse. Also, come to events relatively early so you can have a chance to meet new people, and leave late.Do not skip these if you want to be promoted. Make sure youre seen!4. Make sure people in the company know who you areThere are always a few people in each company like this. You dont work with them directly but you know who they are. You recognize them when theyre walking around. You know their name.Start working your way toward being one of these people. It starts with showing up company events (mentioned above in point #3), but its also something you build each day in the office.Go introduce yourself to other teams and groups in your company.Introduce yourself to people at lunch. Try to get lunches or coffees with people outside of your usual circle. Talk to people in the hallways, the elevator, EVERYWHERE. Whatever it takes. What should you say when you meet them? Create a quick elevator pitch to tell them what you do at the company and who you are.5. Try to be a part of the proc ess for interviewing new peopleIf your company has multiple people involved in the interview process (rather than just one manager interviewing people and deciding), ask your boss if you can be a part of it.Youll gain valuable experience, youll feel like you are a bigger part of the company, and its another way of showing management that youre interested in your work and that youre looking to be a bigger part of the company. The worst that happens if you ask is they say they donât think youâre ready yet. No big deal. Ask again six months later! Even asking and hearing no is STILL going to leave a positive impression on management because youve taken initiative and clearly told them you are looking for more ways to involve yourself (more on that coming up)6. Never complainThis is so important and one of the most powerful ways to get promoted at your job. I know itâs hard sometimes but you cannot complain if you want to be viewed positively. Itâll ruin your relationship with pe ople.If youre having a tough day, you dont feel like being at work, or something a colleague said to you is really bothering you- think twice before complaining out loud! Its going to hurt your reputation and people WILL remember. So if you want to get promoted at your job, wait until youre home and vent to a friend, not at the office!7. Be accountable and communicate clearlyIf youâre going to be late on a project, tell your boss! One of the best ways to get promoted at your job is to be transparent and have a rule of no surprises for your boss and team. And be accountable. If you say youâll do something, do it. If you cant do something, make this clear and explain why right away. Its amazing how many bad situations you can avoid by just communicating clearly, pointing out a problem the minute you see it instead of trying to cover it up, and things like that. Be super accountable and upfront, and EVERYONE will trust you more.Speaking of trust8. Show up on time every single dayThere have been studies that show just showing up when you say you would does a TON to build trust. Your boss will see you as being so much more reliable if you simply go to work on time. And managers promote people who they can trust. So showing up to work on time every single day is probably the simplest, easiest way to get promoted quickly at your job.And its something anyone can do. It takes zero talent or skill.Just leave early enough to get work on time, no excuses. If you want to get promoted, this is a must-do. If you arent doing this, or are making excuses to yourself right now about why you cant do this then you dont want to get promoted badly enough. Somebody else is willing to do this, and theyll get promoted first most likely.9. ASKIf you dont ask for something, you wont receive it. Your boss isnt a mind-reader. Thats why the whole first section of this article was dedicated to asking for a promotion. While youre sitting quietly wondering why you havent gotten promoted, your b oss might be wondering if you really want more responsibility, if you like being here, etc.So dont make them guess. Go ask for the promotion! Tell them youd love to be considered for the next opportunity available. And before this, you should have been spending time taking on more responsibility unofficially (without more pay or a new job title). Thats what step #2 above was all about!Getting promoted is a great way to advance your career without having to change companies often. It also looks fantastic on your resume. If you read the steps above, you now know how to ask for a promotion and advance your career!
